The dental implant is a kind of artificial tooth root, which is usually made of titanium and is available in various shapes and coatings. Implants offer a variety of options for dentures: they can be provided with single crowns, crown blocks or bridge constructions. In addition, they can serve as pillars for prostheses.

Under local anesthetic, an implant is inserted into the tooth gap in the jawbone. Afterwards, this must heal in about four to six months. If no complications occur during this period (for example inflammations), the tooth structure (likethe tooth crown), the so-called superstructure, are anchored to the implant. Such a supply thus consists of an artificial tooth root, the implant, and the artificial tooth crown, the superstructure.

Implant-supported solutions are the best way to restore a tooth in its natural way. In addition to a high degree of aesthetics, implant supplies ensure a high degree of chewing comfort and prevent the bone substance from decaying at the sites where there is no longer any natural tooth root due to ingrowth into the jawbone. In addition, they ensure a long shelf life. Long-term studies come to results of 15 to 20 years and more. Prerequisite for such a success, however, are sufficient and healthy jawbone substance as well as a good oral hygiene.

The advantages of an implant over a bridge:

-For a bridge, the healthy neighbouring teeth must be ground to hold the bridge. This is not the case with implants.

-The aesthetic is excellent. Implants allow room for an absolutely firm bite. Better than with a natural tooth, because the artificial root is made of sturdy titanium and firmly anchored in the jawbone.

-Very high, almost unlimited service life.

-Not the slightest impairment of natural language.

-Very gentle surgical procedure.

-Very good body compatibility.

-Implants give you back your natural smile.

The disadvantages:

-Implants are usually not immediately resilient. This means they have to grow into the jaw for a period of 0 to 6 months.

-Implants can only be used where there is enough bone.
